Mississauga, Ontario — February 26, 2015 — The mayor of Mississauga is looking into the implementation of a central impound lot for the city’s tagged and towed vehicles.
The Brampton Guardian reports Mayor Bonnie Crombie presented the idea to council members at a February 25 meeting, directing staff to gather information to send to the Towing Industry Advisory Committee for consideration.
In the report, Crombie said establishing the proposed lot, akin to other cities such as Vancouver, would generate increased revenue and provide protection for residents, who she says are at the mercy of towing companies.
Ron Starr, Ward 6 Councillor and Towing Committee Chair, told the Guardian that he was caught off guard by the mayor’s request. He says it should have originated with the towing committee, noting they had been discussing the topic for at least the past two years.
Starr added that the committee is currently undergoing approval of new members, joining other councillors in suggesting the mayor delay her actions until the process is complete.
The Guardian reports Crombie is going ahead with the directed proposal despite councillor’s grievances.
