Man arrested after allegedly stealing, crashing Toronto tow truck

Toronto, Ontario — June 15, 2015 — Police arrested an alleged tow truck thief following a high-speed chase in Toronto’s west end late last week.

The suspect was driving a Honda when he was involved in a single-vehicle collision near Highway 400 and Steeles Ave. W. at 2:10 a.m. on June 12. The OPP say the 39-year-old then reportedly fled the scene in a tow truck responding to the crash.

The tow operator had exited the vehicle when the man jumped in and sped off down Highway 400, leading officers down several streets in the city’s west end before plunging into a flower bed near the Downsview OPP detachment, CBC News reports.

Officers briefly pursued the suspect on foot in the Keele St. and Wilson Ave. area before apprehending the Scotland, Ontario man.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues. Police say alcohol doesn’t appear to have played a role.
