Edmonton, Alberta — March 31, 2015 — Stony Plain RCMP are on the lookout for a suspect vehicle following a hit and run involving a tow truck driver. According to iNews880, the tower was clipped by the mirror of a white one-tonne truck driving westbound on Highway 16 near the Highway 60 overpass on the morning of March 23. The tow operator had been roadside, responding to a call when the collision took place. Police and emergency services arrived on the scene, reporting the tow truck driver was conscious and breathing with minor injuries. Alberta Motor Association’s (AMA) Randy Loyk told iNews880 the incident serves as a reminder to motorists to hit the brakes when approaching tow trucks with their amber lights flashing. “It’s extremely important, when you see flashing lights at the side of the road, slow down and move over try and get as much distance between you and that vehicle as possible,” he says. Under the province’s Traffic Safety Act, drivers must reduce their speed to 60 km/h, or the posted speed if lower, when passing parked emergency vehicles with their lights flashing. Motorists in violation of this law are subject to demerit points and fines based on the severity of their speeding offence.
