Steve Matchett of Lyons Auto Body to receive Community Hero Award

Mississauga, Ontario — April 25, 2013 — Tow truck driver Steve Matchett has been named as a recipient of the Community Hero Award for his heroic efforts last year, when he worked as part of a team to rescue Edyta Tobiasz after a tractor-trailer toppled onto her vehicle. Matchett shares the award with Port Credit OPP Const. Andrew Duncan. The award will be presented on May 16 at the annual Civic Awards Reception in the Grand Hall at the Civic Centre. Const. Duncan arrived on the scene to find Tobiasz trapped in her crushed Mazda SUV. Duncan said the SUV was so battered that he thought it was a car. He got as close as possible to the vehicle so he could talk to Tobiasz and reassure her that rescue efforts were underway. Matchett was working industriously at this time on lifting the trailer off the car, using a 50-tonne hydraulic winch. It was a harrowing experience with no margin for error, but Matchett preserved. Tobiasz was later taken to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto by air ambulance, and released a short time later with no injuries. Matchett is employed with Lyons Auto Body and has been with the business for 35 years.
