Ontario government passes second reading of Bill 15

Toronto, Ontario — November 5, 2014 — The Ontario government has passed the second reading of Bill 15, the Fighting Fraud and Reducing Automobile Insurance Rates Act, and it is now being referred to the Standing Committee on General Government for review.

Bill 15 contains proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection Act, Highway Traffic Act and Repair and Storage Liens Act relating to towing and vehicle storage. The bill includes the towing and storage provisions previously included in former Bills 171 and 189, without substantive changes.

The Standing Committee on General Government is scheduled to hold public hearings on Bill 15 in Toronto on Nov. 5, 2014.

Public hearings provide members of the public—individuals or organizations—the opportunity to make presentations to the Standing Committee, and for the Committee to engage in debate regarding a bill outside the House. Public input is received by way of written submissions, oral presentations or both.

Public members interested in making an oral presentation on Bill 15, should contact Sylwia Przezdziecki at 416-325-3515 or sylwia_przezdziecki@ontla.ola.orgas. Witnesses will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

Those who do not wish to make an oral presentation but wish to comment on the Bill may send written submissions to Przezdziecki at the Clerk of the Committee office by 6 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2014.

Comments can be sent to:
Standing Committee on General Government
Room 1405 Whitney Block
Queen’s Park, Toronto, Ont

If Bill 15 passes, the government will consult with stakeholders on the development of regulations necessary to support the implementation of the Bill. Options for the best way to consult on these regulatory details are being considered.
