Let’s Talk Towing: CAA, OPP and PTAO hosting virtual town hall

Toronto, Ontario — The Ontario division of CAA, along with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Provincial Towing Association of Ontario (PTAO) have announced an upcoming virtual town hall to discuss the current challenges facing the towing industry.

The virtual meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT, is open to all attendees and will cover the ongoing challenges facing Canada’s towing sector, and an overview of what the future of the sector could entail.

The town hall comes almost two months after Ontario’s provincial government announced an internal task force intended to provide recommendations to reform the industry. The announcement was a result of continued media coverage related to insurance fraud, dishonest practices among some GTA tow truck operators, increased tension and acts of violence within the sector.

Currently, only 18 of Ontario’s 444 municipalities have bylaws regulating towing—less than five percent of all communities across the province.

A public opinion survey commissioned by CAA in April 2020 showed that only one in five Ontarians felt “very protected” under current rules and regulations. A resounding 90 percent of Ontarians surveyed support regulations such as tow truck licensing, training certifications for tow operators and provincial oversight of the industry, said CAA.
