Calgary, Alberta — March 25, 2015 — Unpredictable spring weather is keeping a High River towing company on its toes. Big Rock Towing and Recovery’s Operations Manager Tyler Hart told High River Online that Monday’s pileup along Highway 2 near Aldersyde was one of the largest he’s ever seen. “In the history of our company we’ve done a lot of vehicle collisions. We’ve done 10 car pileups on the Okotoks overpass. This was a bigger one,” he said in the report. “We’ve never actually seen it this size where our company couldn’t handle all the work. We had to bring in other companies.” Hart says about 20 to 25 vehicles required a tow, while many others needed help getting out of the ditch—where many motorists found themselves in an attempt to avoid rear-ending another car. Hart says this is a smart move, considering the alternative. The company’s impound lot also took in around 14 small vehicles. Noting that conditions can change very quickly, Hart advises that car owners keep their winter tires on for now. “The cement is warm because we’ve had a mild winter. When you have a mild winter the cement stays warm and when the wet snow falls it creates an instant layer of ice,” Hart says, adding that drivers need to remember to slow down.
