Edmonton teen recreates Highway Thru Hell with LEGO web series

HTHLEGOHTHLEGOEdmonton, Alberta — July 30, 2015 — Reality TV hit Highway Thru Hell has inspired a 15-year-old tow truck driver hopeful to film his own version of the show’s heavy duty rescues and recoveries, where Lego takes centre stage.

Edmonton native Christopher Huine dedicates hours to analyzing the show, writing scripts, and studying and building the trucks before filming each re-imagined episode of the Discovery Channel series and uploading it to the YouTube channel HTHLEGO, The Edmonton Journal reports.

Armed with a growing Lego collection, featuring specialized pieces he orders online, his iPad camera and the help of a retired neighbour, Huine has posted over 50 short videos to date, with his most popular episode racking up almost 2,800 views.

It takes around three hours and $50 to $100 to construct each truck, and while the HTHLEGO episodes are usually set in the confines of his Mill Woods neighbourhood, Huine has ventured as far as the Mill Creek Ravine and along the bridge that crosses Anthony Henday Drive at 34th Street. The Highway Thru Hell fan has also made the trek to Hope, B.C., where the show is shot.

Huine’s passion is evident, especially to series star Jamie Davis, owner and operator of the focus of the reality series, Jamie Davis Motor Truck. The two met at a trade show, where Huine showed Davis his work.

Davis told the Journal that he was blown away by the teen’s devotion, and doesn’t think he’s seen anything like it before.

“It’s incredible for a kid of his age to be so far advanced and involved,” Davis says. “He’s spent hours of painstaking time building the vehicles as well as the characters. He recreated all of that, and he made it his own.”

With the fourth season of Highway Thru Hell set to air this September, Huine’s recreations won’t stop anytime soon. He says he plans to update the HTHLEGO channel every Tuesday with the latest instalment.

But, Davis points out, the next season may pose some challenges for the teen.

“There’s [one episode] where a tanker and a log truck hit and they burn to the ground,” Davis said in the report. “I don’t know if he can imitate that one.”
