Montreal, Quebec — January 23, 2015 — Montreal has seen a dramatic spike in the number of cars towed this winter, with figures showing a 50 percent increase in comparison to last year.
CBC reports that since the start of the season, over 27,000 vehicles have been hauled away for snow removal. One year ago, the city’s total was closer to 18,000.
Topping the list for the most vehicles towed is Montreal’s populous Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, recording 4,012 tows since mid-November, a sharp contrast to last year’s 2,211. The Plateau-Mont-Royal borough was not too far behind with a figure of 3,700 — double the area’s total last year.
The report cites recent weather as a driving factor in the increase, noting a January ice storm and snow accumulation levels having already surpassed last winter’s total of 172 cm.
Offering another potential reason for the climb, towing company Remorquage Cam 2000’s Jean-Luc Lefebvre told CBC that motorists often complain of a lack of signage when parking in snow removal areas.
