Winnipeg, Manitoba — Sept. 11, 2013 — Dr. Hook Towing Service Ltd. has laid claim to the Manitoba Trucking Association’s (MTA) 2013 Truck Pull title.
“It was a good feeling to win the competition again,” says Dr. Hook Towing Services’ owner Nick Roscoe. “We had won it before and to win it again was quite gratifying.”
The friendly competition, which took place on Sept. 6, 2013 at the Polo Park Shopping Centre, featured six other teams of 10 that competed alongside “Team Hooked Up.” Among them were Big Freight Systems Inc., Payne Transportation LP, Bison Transport Inc., Maxim Truck and Trailer, Cummins Inc. and defending champions Sysco Food Services.
In addition to the competing towing companies, the Truck Pull competition was also sponsored by Beaver Truck Centre, Guardian Traffic Rentals and Polo Park Shopping Centre.
The object of the competition was for a given team to pull a tractor trailer between two points in the fastest time possible. The team from Dr. Hook ultimately edged out the defending champions from Sysco Food Services, clocking in at 13.8 seconds while Sysco fell just short with a time of 13.9 seconds. Beyond the spectacle itself, each company contributed $500 as a registration-type donation with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the United Way.
“It’s a multi-tiered charity that does a great deal throughout the city. Their funds are distributed through a vast cross-section of causes,” says Roscoe. “When you see the money being distributed locally you get to see the results in how it benefits the surrounding communities.”
Roscoe says he was very pleased by the turnout for the 2013 Truck Pull competition and hopes to see more teams take part and an even larger audience attending the annual charity event in the coming years.
“There’s huge potential to expand in the future to raise more money with more participants,” he says.
Altogether the teams raised a total of $3,500 in just one minute and 42 seconds, the combined times of all seven teams
Roscoe was glad to be involved once again and looks forward to taking part for years to come.
“It was great to have our people come together and work towards something they can feel good about,” he says. “All of the effort is for charity, and the United Way does so much for the city of Winnipeg. It’s amazing how you can transform so much energy into a large sum of donations over such a short period of time, especially when it’s for such a good cause.”
