Toronto, Ontario – A Toronto cop is being booked with even more charges, following a development in the ongoing Project Overhaul; an investigation into corruption in the towing industry launched by the Toronto Police Service in August 2019.
Const. Ronald Joseph of the Toronto Police Service is facing eight new charges, including forgery, four counts of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of public mischief, following his re-arrest on Feb.19.
Joseph was previously charged in June 2020 with theft over $5,000 and breach of trust, as part of Project Overhaul, where he and nine others were charged with a total of 50 criminal offences.
As part of the initial arrest in June, Joseph was alleged to have stolen an encrypted police radio, duplicated it and returned it to police circulation.
As well, it is alleged that Joseph and the nine other officers charged, operating out of 13, 22 and 32 Divisions, were using the encrypted radios to operate an insurance scam.
In a development revealed by a press release from the Toronto Police Service, it was found that Joseph, the other officers and a 28-year-old man from Barrie had been filing fraudulent insurance claims for staged collisions.
“The fake collisions would then be reported to fraudulently claim on insurance for money. It alleged several false claims were made from April 2018 to May 2020,” read the press release.
Joseph has been suspended with pay as per the terms of the Police Services Act.
