Port Dover, Ontario — July 23, 2015 — Thanks to the efforts of two local tow companies, a group of children were given the opportunity to build their own bikes this past weekend in Port Dover, Ontario.
The area’s inaugural Build a Bike program, facilitated through Big Brothers Big Sisters Grand Erie, saw staff from Misner Towing and SOS Towing donate three hours of their time and nine bikes to the July 18 event, the Simcoe Reformer reports. Employees from both companies were on hand to help kids with the assembly of their new rides.
Misner Towing’s Tracey Scruton says she caught wind of the program at a CAA meeting.
“Other tow companies were doing this, but it was only for the city people. There was nothing in our area so I said, ‘let’s do it’,” Scruton said in the report, adding that she enjoyed the event’s educational aspect and that she thinks the children will appreciate their bikes all the more for having actually played a role in putting them together.
Ashley Cordier, a mentor coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters, told the Reformer that the participation from both companies demonstrated a strong sense of community-mindedness and a desire to give back.
The three organizations aim to make Build a Bike an annual community event, and have already received donations for next year.
