Ottawa, Ontario — May 11, 2015 — Despite efforts of emergency workers — including two tow truck drivers — a two-vehicle collision on Ottawa’s Greenbank Road has left a 54-year-old man dead.
CBC reports the May 9 crash occurred before 7:15 a.m., when the victim’s Mercury Cougar collided with a Toyota Tundra pickup pulling a small trailer. Police say both vehicles were travelling northbound between West Hunt Club and Fallowfield roads when the Cougar clipped the truck while attempting to pass it.
The driver lost control of the car, which rolled over into a ditch, trapping the man inside.
Cory Legue joined another tow truck driver in responding to the accident, using a flatbed truck to flip the totalled car so firefighters could reach the driver, who had succumbed to his injuries.
“It sucks. You wish the person was still alive . . . It’s brutal,” Legue told CBC, adding that his heart goes out to the victim’s family.
Legue is no stranger to acting quickly in an emergency. In February, he pulled a woman to safety after she fell through the ice on the Rideau Canal.
According to reports, the 26-year-old driver of the Toyota escaped unharmed, and made the initial call to police.
“He was really shaken up,” Legue says.
